After lots of speculation that the Titans would trade the #1 overall pick in this years’ NFL draft, it’s official…they made a deal with the L.A. Rams that was announced this morning. My immediate reaction: the Rams are IDIOTS. Titans fans should be dancing in the streets, and Rams fans should crack open a beer right now to start drinking their sorrows away.
Official parameters of the deal are as follows:
Rams get: #1 overall pick in 2016, 4th rounder in 2016 and 6th rounder in 2016
Titans get: #15 overall pick, two 2nd round picks in 2016, 3rd rounder in 2016 and the Rams’ 1st and 3rd round picks in the 2017 draft
Why it matters: because it’s the #1 pick in the NFL draft and what else are we going to talk about until the NBA playoffs start? Baseball? HAHAHAHA…plus, this will give the Titans 7 picks in the first 3 rounds of the 2016 NFL draft and 5 picks in the first 3 rounds of next years’ draft. Meanwhile the Rams are mortgaging their future for a chance to finally get a franchise QB to compete with Seattle and Arizona in the NFC West.
Not so hot take: On the surface this obviously isn’t the same type of haul that the Rams got a few years ago in the RGIII trade with Washington (St. Louis got three 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder), but for a team with tons of holes on their roster this is a big win for Tennessee. Why? They were stuck at #1 – a place typically reserved for selecting the next franchise QB, but that’s one of the few things they have locked up on their roster. Marcus Mariota is their guy, so they needed a high volume of picks to get playmakers around him and build up their defense. Check and check. Add in the trade for DeMarco Murray earlier this offseason and the Titans should be thrilled about the potential for a quick turnaround.
For the Rams, I obviously knew that they weren’t going into the season with Case Keenum as their starting QB. But this also tells me that Jeff Fisher is finally feeling some heat and they were willing to go all in to make a run NOW. And for the record, I don’t for the life of me understand why Fisher still has this job. In 4 seasons with the Rams he’s 27-36-1 (.430 win %) and hasn’t won more than 7 games in a single season. For a guy who’s been coaching for 21 years and has only 1 Super Bowl appearance (which he lost), I don’t know why he gets the benefit of the doubt when other franchises kick their coaches to the curb like the drunk chick they picked up at the bar last night. Anyway, the Rams are obviously taking a QB and given that neither of the top prospects (Carson Wentz or Jared Goff) are considered slam dunks, you have to wonder if they’re worth trading up for. Plus, given the way the draft board is slotted right now, there aren’t many teams ahead of where the Rams were originally slotted at 15 that need a QB (really just Cleveland at #2). So there’s a good chance that Goff or Wentz would be sitting there at #15. That tells me that the Rams were pretty damn sure the Browns are taking a QB at #2 overall and they must feel strongly enough about one of those guys (Goff or Wentz) that they weren’t willing to risk the Browns snagging them. All I know is they better not fuck this up.
