I am prefacing this with a disclaimer: I did not watch Friends while growing up. I am a 90s baby and I wasn’t even born when the show’s first episode aired in 1994. Netflix added Friends to its site in January of 2015. This is when I began my two-month long relationship with my laptop and my teeny tiny residence bed. After binge watching the entire series in under 8 weeks I immediately fell in love with Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe and Joey. I had seen bits of the show while growing up as my mother watched it until its final episode in 2004. The six Friends taught me many life lessons such as what not to do when you’re wearing leather pants.
But, I learned the most important lessons from Rachel’s iconic ensembles.
You might be wondering why I’m writing another Friends related post to add to the thousands that already exist. After recently rewatching Friends I realized that Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, anticipated many of 2016’s style trends. From slips to mom-jeans, your favorite Friends character donned these clothes way before Topshop and Zara started selling them. Rachel Green, initially known for her iconic haircut, came to represent classic 90s style. Today, Rachel Green remains the ultimate fashion muse.
Rachel’s most notable style trends include:
Slip dresses and lots of them.
She also demonstrated her ability to layer with this dress which appears to be made out of velvet (a material that made a come back in 2016)
Rachel also knew how to rock a good pair of overalls
Speaking of denim…. Monica, Pheobe, and Rachel all loved a good pair of mom jeans. Who can blame them?
Rachel could also be spoted in “The Episode when…” she wore a choker
Do you know what pairs well with knee high boots? A mini skirt. This was a go to outfit for Rachel.
I would like to thank Rachel Green for all of the inspiration that went into my closet this year and made a huge dent in my bank account. Now let’s celebrate the fashion icon that is Rachel Green by drowning our holiday related stress in cheap wine!
